Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia and Natural Therapies

Ask anyone, including myself who has had a family member or friend affected by either or any condition similar, it is tragic. The reality is whilst it is so challenging for the person, for those around them it can be so very difficult also. Another aspect of these conditions, they do not seem to be very selective…they can affect people of different intellects, cultures, educational levels, skills, etc.

Generally speaking, conventional treatment of the above, only offers temporary relief of some symptoms and for a limited number of patients. Mainstream treatment does not bring much in the way of slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Let us take a look at what these conditions are and the difference between these commonly used terms. In very simple words it would seem the connection with these conditions is a build-up of plaque and tau tangles might be the body’s protective response to chronic inflammation, though the research behind this idea is still developing. In so doing, this idea would bring the opportunity for new possibilities in preventing and “treating” Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Predisposition or potential likelihood of these conditions include –

  • Advanced age
  • Genetics/family member history
  • Inflammatory diet
  • Heavy metal toxicity and other environmental toxins
  • Chronic stress
  • Sleep issues
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Head injury
  • Gum disease
  • Female gender
  • Cellular function problems
  • Dysbiotic gut microbiome

Some of the very simple and maybe some a little more involved are ways we can help others and ourselves with prevention in mind –

Diet– Sugar consumption is high on the list of contributory factors. It would seem as though the tendency to store fat around the waistline is 3.5 times more susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease. Foods such as healthy fats, whole grains, fish, lean, proteins, nuts, fruits and vegetables have been shown to assist with cognitive function.

Exercise – even 30mins gentle aerobic exercises each day helps increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain.

Mindfulness – being outdoors, involved in activities such as meditation, social interaction, time with pets, and helping others.

Quality Sleep – consistency of sleep, exercising eg. that beneficial walk after dinner is best at least 3 hours before sleep, decrease in caffeine generally, however, especially within 8 hours of sleep, reduce blue light before bedtime. Blue blockers are amazingly helpful. (http://www.urbanhipee.com.au)

Natural condiments, etc – Turmeric and other members of the Ginger family, Coconut oil interestingly can increase communication in the brain in addition to brain function generally. This anti-inflammatory health fat helps restore the lining of the nerve cells, Vitamin B-12, Ginkgo biloba extract assists with improved memory and overall neurology. Ginseng is very beneficial for cognitive function. Cinnamon extract improves blood flow to the brain by reducing arterial plaque, Sage – offers improved cognitive function Lemon Balm (in the form of tea).

Acupuncture – always a positive modality to add for overall mental/physical/emotional health.

Sociability – research has shown this as simple as it may sound, has so much to offer.

Oral hygiene – this is somewhat of an unusual one, however, it would seem the overall health of the body and brain cannot be overstated. Inflammation associated with gum disease can increase the beta-amyloid plaque in the brain.

Removal of Heavy Metals/Environmental Factors – aspects such as mould, biotoxins, pollution, exposure to electromagnetic radiation, etc. None of the listed is conducive to our health anyway.
