Cold Sores
This condition, also known as “fever blisters” is presents with small fluid filled blister-like spots that appear in or around the outside of the mouth. These blisters are often grouped together in patches. After the blisters break, a scab forms that can last several days. Cold sores usually heal in two to three weeks without leaving a scar.
Cold sores spread from person to person by close contact, eg. kissing. They are usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and less commonly herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both virus types can affect the mouth or genitals and can be spread by oral sex. Cold sores are contagious even if you the sores are not visible. The virus usually manifests when the immune system has been compromised.
There is no cure for cold sores, but there are ways to treat the symptoms and prevent new outbreaks. For some strange reason, those under the Gemini star sign, are susceptible to this condition.
Symptoms –
Cold sores start with an itchy/tingling sensation usually on the mouth, lips or nose and may form small blisters that crust after 3 days.
These usually clear after 2 weeks without leaving any scars. They can be highly contagious, even when the blisters aren’t present. The virus can spread between people by direct physical contact, eg. kissing, skin-to-skin contact and sharing glassware, cups, eating utensils, towels or toothbrushes with someone who already has a cold sore.
As well as a blister-like spot, the following symptoms are also common –
pain and swelling in the mouth
swollen glands
Natural Remedies which offer help –
Essential oils – Tea Tree, Peppermint, Anise, Oregano, Lemon balm, Thyme, Sandalwood, Eucalyptus, Ginger oils can assist with antiseptic/antiviral properties and some help enhance the immune system. Important to dilute with a calming carrier oil for instance coconut or jojoba and also using separate cotton buds to avoid cross contamination.
Important information when using Essential oils-
Overuse of essential oils on your skin can weaken the skin’s epidermis.
Check for allergy or sensitivity to the ingredients of any of the above-mentioned oils before using them. Do a spot test with any essential oil on another part of your skin before you apply it to an open cold sore.
Possible side effects from using essential oils to treat a cold sore range from a moderate stinging sensation to burning or bleeding at the site of the sore. Suggest cease using the oil if you feel like your skin is having a negative reaction.
Kanuka Honey – has a reputation for helping wounds and skin injuries and can be useful for treating cold sores.
Apple cider vinegar – ability to fight bacteria, viruses, and much more. Best re to dilute before using, applying only once or twice per day.

Quite apart from the immune system and contact with the herpes simplex virus, often cold sores develop when there is a situation around expression/communication. Skin conditions are usually connected with “someone or something getting under our skin”. Mouth/lips/throat/etc are related to communication. Combining these two one could say that there could be something to be said or done, clearing suppression. Our body is a mirror of what is happening emotionally.
